Career & Technical Initial Authorization, Secondary Level
This authorization allows individuals with industry experience but no teaching the opportunity to teach at the secondary level with a limited license. Many of the listed courses are required for endorsement in career and technical education at the high school level.

The Iowa BOEE also requires an Ethics Training course. This can be completed online through your AEA and is free to Iowa school district employees.

This endorsement is designed for those who supervise students in on-the-job situations such as cooperative education programs and school-to-work programs.

After you have successfully completed the required endorsement courses, you may add the endorsement to your Iowa teaching license. Students will work directly with the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners and instructions for adding the endorsement to your teaching license can be found at https://boee.iowa.gov/endorsements/add-endorsement-license.

An application for admission is not required for this program. Please submit an enrollment form at distance.uni.edu/enroll to be registered for coursework.
All students pay the same tuition rate, regardless of location, making it an affordable option for all students.
Tuition is $253 per unit, plus a $10 non-refundable enrollment fee per course -- regardless of location or graduate-level status. A technology fee also applies to online courses. UNI students, tuition for GIS courses is in addition to full-time, on-campus rates -- please see important financial aid information.
An additional technology fee per course may apply. Tuition and fees are expected to rise each May and are subject to raises throughout the academic year as approved by the Iowa Board of Regents.
To be notified about new Career and Technical Education Professional Development course offerings, please complete the online interest form to the right and we will contact you as information becomes available. Students may begin courses at any time.
If you hold an Iowa teaching license, the best way to get started is to work with the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners to determine the courses you need to take. Please contact Dave Wempen at David.Wempen@Iowa.gov or by phone at 515-281-3605 for assistance. Upon receipt of the evaluation, proceed to step three.
The next step is to enroll in a course. Visit the Guided Independent Studies enrollment page and select any of the INDIVSTU 4159/5159 courses available on the GIS course list.

Upon successful completion of the required courses, you may add the endorsement to your Iowa teaching license by completing the Application to Add an Endorsement from the Board of Educational Examiners.
If you have completed all of the required endorsement courses through UNI, follow option 1 on the Add an Endorsement to a License page. This allows you to apply to an endorsement through UNI. The BOEE does charge a fee to add the endorsement.
