This endorsement is offered in conjunction with the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) MA program. Courses are designed using the Quality Matters set of professional standards based upon research, best practices and national standards for course design.
The courses provided by UNI that match the Iowa ESL endorsement requirements are as follows:
TESOL 5120 Introduction to Linguistics
TESOL 6510 Second Language Acquisition
TESOL 6286 Studies in ESL Practicum
LANG 5740 Approaches to Language Learning and Teaching
TESOL 5760 Principles and Practices in Language Teaching
Knowledge of Cultural and Linguistic Diversity
TESOL 6289 Seminar in Language: Bilingualism and Bilingual Education
TESOL 5520 Cultural Aspects of Language and Language Teaching
Documentation of supervised teaching at both the K-6 and 7-12 levels is also required for the ESL endorsement.
Courses are offered using a combination of Zoom, a video conferencing system, and eLearning, a Blackboard eLearning management system. Courses meeting in the fall and spring semesters are taught in eight-week modules on Thursday evenings.
While most students encounter very few technical difficulties with our online courses, our team of support specialists is available to assist you as needed.

To be notified about new Iowa ESL Endorsement cohort offerings, please complete the online interest form to the right and we will keep you updated with program information. The next cohort is scheduled to begin Fall 2020.
If you are a graduate of UNI for your Elementary Education K-6 licensure, the best way to get started with regard to the Iowa ESL Endorsement is to work with Linda Feuchtwanger in the Registrar's Office at 319-273-2273 or Linda.Feuchtwanger@uni.edu to determine the courses you need to take to complete the endorsement. Upon receipt of the evaluation, proceed to step three.
If you are not a graduate of UNI, but hold an Iowa elementary K-6 license, you should move to step three and enroll for the courses offered in the fall.

If you are a graduate of UNI for your Elementary K-6 licensure, you may add the endorsement to your Iowa teaching license after you have successfully completed the required endorsement courses. Obtain the Application to Add an Endorsement from the Board of Educational Examiners. Print the application, complete Section I, attach the required fee (made payable to the Board of Educational Examiners) and mail the form and fee to:

Upon receipt of your application, the Record Analyst will complete the institutional section and forward the form and fee to the Board of Educational Examiners in Des Moines for processing. The Board of Educational Examiners will send the updated license directly to you at the address listed on your application.

Delivery of the program is contingent on a sufficient number of students being accepted into the program.
