This endorsement is offered in conjunction with the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) MA program. Courses are designed using the Quality Matters set of professional standards based upon research, best practices and national standards for course design.
The courses provided by UNI that match the Iowa ESL endorsement requirements are as follows:

TESOL 6510 Second Language Acquisition
LANG 4740/5740 Approaches to Language Learning and Teaching
TESOL 4760/5760 Principles and Practices in Language Teaching
TESOL 6286 Studies in ESL Practicum
TESOL 6289 Seminar in Language: Bilingualism and Bilingual Education
TESOL 4520/5520 Cultural Aspects of Language and Language Teaching
Documentation of supervised teaching at both the K-6 and 7-12 levels is also required for the ESL endosrement.
Courses are offered using a combination of Adobe Connect, a desktop video conferencing system and online via eLearning, a Blackboard learning management system. Courses meeting in the fall and spring semesters are taught in eight-week modules on Thursday evenings.
While most students encounter very few technical difficulties with our online courses, our team of support specialists is available to assist you as needed.

Complete the online interest form to the right. This form is used to express your intent to enroll, it does not confirm that you are enrolled in the ESL coursework for the Spring 2018 term. The Department of Languages and Literatures will review your submission and notify you if you have been accepted to the program. Acceptance is on a first come, first served basis.
Once you have received acceptance from the Department of Languages and Literatures, the Office of Continuing and Distance Education will email you enrollment information for the Spring 2018 courses.
Delivery of this program is subject to minimum enrollment requirements.
