Online Course Design

All online courses are expected to have undergone a comprehensive QM review or meet the QM Course Design Essentials standards.  

Quality Matters (QM) Comprehensive Course Design Workshop - Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) / Designing Your Online Course (DYOC)

This two-day QM professional development workshop is comprised of two foundational component workshops. The first, APPQMR, is QM's flagship workshop on the QM Rubric and the application of the rubric to online courses. The second component, DYOC, focuses on learning objectives and overall course alignment. Detailed description here.

    Workshops meet 9:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. each day (via Zoom).

Stipend: $1000 for completion of both days of the workshop, with a commitment that courses developed will meet QM standards.

QM Course Design Essentials – Tutorial

This self-guided tutorial contains four video walkthroughs and a curated selection of documents and resources. The emphasis in QM Course Design Essentials is placed on high-impact elements in QM General Standards 1, 2, and 5, which focus on research-based standards of best practice in developing a Course Introduction and Overview, Learning Objectives (Competencies), and Learner Activities/Learner Interaction. This tutorial is designed for faculty members with a range of experience teaching online, including those new to developing and teaching online or blended courses. Detailed description here. 

Available as an ongoing, self-guided resource in Blackboard. Participants should plan to spend 1-2 hours to move through the material.

NEW -- QM Course Design Essentials – Workshop

This interactive, synchronous three-hour workshop expands upon and supplements the QM Course Design Essentials Tutorial offered in Blackboard, as well as Rod Library resources for online instructors. It is designed for faculty teaching online or teaching a blended course with online interaction. Detailed description here. 

Pre-requisite: full review of the QM Course Design Essentials -- Tutorial prior to the start of the workshop.

Participants will receive a brief assignment to complete prior to the workshop.

QM Peer Review Certification (PRC) Course

Designed to prepare experienced online faculty to become QM-Certified Peer Reviewers, the PRC includes a review of foundational principles of QM and the QM Rubric. Recommended for faculty, staff, or administrators who have completed APPQMR and who wish to learn more about becoming a Peer Reviewer. Detailed description here.

Offered asynchronously by a QM facilitator over a three-week timeframe. Participants will spend 10-12 hours per week on the course. Workshops are available from October through December.

Stipend: $500 for completing the PRC

Teaching Strategies

QM Introduction to Teaching Online

This interactive workshop provides a foundation for best practices of teaching and learning in an online environment. Recommended for faculty and administrators interested in the components of effective online teaching, including those new to the environment and individuals who wish to gain additional insights into research-based teaching strategies in an asynchronous environment. Detailed description here.

    • Online - October 29-November 12, 2020 - this workshop is full; please click Next Steps below to express your interest in a future TOL workshop.
      Led by a QM facilitator in an asynchronous format. Participants can expect to spend approximately 10 hours a week over the two-week period.

Stipend: $500

QM Using Instructional Materials & Technology to Promote Learner Engagement Workshop

This workshop focuses on continuous improvement in aligning learning objectives and assessments, as well as effective integration of instructional materials, activities, and technology to enhance student learning.  Designed for faculty members who have completed APPQMR/DYOC and have taught online, participants will identify a specific change they wish to implement in their course, implement the change, and document the effects. Detailed description here.

Offered asynchronously by a QM facilitator over a two-week timeframe, plus arranged time for implementation. Participants will spend 10-12 hours per week on the course.
