The University of Northern Iowa’s Department of Educational Leadership, via Continuing and Distance Education, will offer an Advanced Studies Certificate in Superintendency beginning Jan. 2017. This two-year program is designed for individuals seeking endorsement in the state of Iowa as a superintendent or AEA administrator and is unique in that it maximizes on-site skill development while working with a lead mentor and mentors with special expertise. Students gain hands-on experience through an internship where work products and skills are developed.
“The program offers an excellent opportunity for aspiring superintendents to learn from experienced leaders in a supportive cohort format," said program coordinator Denise Schares. "The content, delivery and program expectations are designed to provide in-depth, practical and engaging learning experiences that prepare students to be successful in a role that is becoming increasingly complex and demanding.”
The program uses a cohort model in which a group of students moves through the course sequence together. Courses are offered during the fall and spring semesters via interactive video conferencing and summer sessions include a brief, engaging on-campus experience. Courses are supported online using eLearning, a Blackboard learning management system. To learn more about the program and how to apply, visit distance.uni.edu/superintendency. Applications received by Nov. 15 will receive full consideration.
