Advanced Studies Certificate in Superintendency to be offered at UNI

Barb Schwamman, Superintendent

The University of Northern Iowa's Department of Educational Leadership, via Continuing and Distance Education, will offer an Advanced Studies Certificate in Superintendency beginning spring 2016. This program is designed for individuals seeking endorsement in the state of Iowa as a superintendent or AEA administrator.

The program is unique in that it maximizes on-site skill development while working with a lead mentor and mentors with special expertise. Students gain hands-on experience through an internship where work products and skills are developed.

"The program offers an excellent opportunity for aspiring superintendents to learn from experienced leaders in a supportive cohort format," said Denise Schares, program coordinator and assistant professor of UNI Educational Leadership and Postsecondary Education. "The content, delivery and program expectations are designed to provide in-depth, practical and engaging learning experiences that prepare students to be successful in a role that is becoming increasingly complex and demanding."

The program uses a cohort model in which a group of students moves through the course sequence together. Courses are offered during the fall and spring semesters via interactive video conferencing. Summer classes include an engaging, short on-campus experience. Courses are supported online using eLearning, a Blackboard learning management system.
